single. She may also be divorced or married. She may be a homemaker, adoctor, or a factory worker. It is very difficult to generalize aboutAmerican women. However, one thing that many American women have incommon is their attitudes about themselves and their roles inAmerican life.
Historically,American women have always been very independent. The first settlersto come to New England were ten young couples that had left behindtheir extended(big)families. The women were alone in a new, undeveloped country with theirhusbands. This has two important effects.
Firstof all, this was the uncivilized environment that demanded everyperson to share in developing it and in survival. Women worked withtheir husbands and children to make themselves accepted in this newland. Second, because they were in a new land without the establishedinfluence of older members of society, women felt free to step intonontraditional roles.
Thisrole of women was strengthened in later years as Americans move westagain, leaving families behind and meeting a new environment. Evenlater, in the east, as new settlers arrived, women often found jobsmore easily than men. Women became the supporters of the family.
Withinthe established lifestyle of the industrialized twentieth century, the strong role of women was not attractive as in the early days ofthe country.
Somewomen stepped into the men’s jobs as factory and business workers.
Afterthe war, some women stayed in these positions, and others left their
jobswith a new sense of ability.

Stayingpositive through the cold season could be your best defense
againstgetting ill, new study findings suggest. In an experiment thatexposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers foundthat people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fallill.
Thefindings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build onevidence that a “positivefeeling style”can help get rid of the common cold and other illnesses. Researchersbelieve the reasons may be both objective(客观的)asin happiness improving immune function and subjective as in happypeople being less troubled by a throat ache or runny nose.
“Peoplewith a positive feeling style may have different immune
responsesto the virus,” explained Dr Sheldon Cohen. “And when they do geta cold, they may stop their illness from being more severe.”
Cohenfound in a previous study that happier people seemed less easy tocatch a cold. However, some questions remained as to whether thefeeling itself had the effect.
Forthe new study, the researchers ask 193 healthy adults to completesome standard measures of personality and feeling style. Those whotended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having apositive feeling style, while those who were often unhappy, tense anddepressed had a negative style.
Theresearchers gave them some drops containing either a cold virus or aparticular flu virus. Over the next six days, the volunteers reportedon any
aches, pains, sneezing they had. While the researchers collected objectivedata like daily mucus(粘液)production,Cohen and his partners found that

M:Jane! Nice to meet you here.
W:Bob! Good to see you. Look! I’m just picking up some film for mycamera.
M:You know, I’ve been trying to get in touch with you. Would you beable to come over this Friday? My sister has just returned from atrip to Canada. I thought you two might like to get to know eachother since you are both students of biology.
W:Oh! I’d love to. But I can’t. I have to go to my youngerbrother’s graduation on Friday night after work.
M:Well. It’s really too bad, you can’t make it. When my sister wasin Canada, she spent the whole time photographing interesting plantsalong the northern coast. I have already looked many of the picturesand I can’t believe how wonderful some of those plants are.
W:That sounds great. If I can’t meet her this time, maybe I’ll haveto wait till some other time. M: Yes. It’ll be a pity if you can’tmeet, but there’ll always
beother time.
W:Hey, I’ve got to run. Give me a call later.
M:OK, see you.

W:What part of the paper are you reading?
M:Travel.
W:Are you thinking about our vacation already?
M:Yes, it’s not so far away. I’ve been looking at some of theseads.
W:Why don’t we just go to the same place we went last year?
M:I won’t stay at that hotel again. There wasn’t enough to do.

W:Do you have a better idea for this year?
M:Yes, I do. Look at this ad. This looks like a good vacation to me.
W:“Three weeks.” “Ten exciting ports.” “Use the ship as yourhotel.” How much does it cost? M: We’d have to call them to getthe price.
W:It must be expensive if they don’t give the price in the ad. Andbesides, I’d rather we stayed in one place.
M:I don’t want to sit on the same beach and eat the same food andlook at the same walls every day for three or four weeks.
W:You know the doctor said you shouldn’t try to do too much.
M:He didn’t say that I had to sit in the same chair all day long.

M:Hi Susan, where were you at lunch time? I was saving a seat for youin the coffee shop. W: Oh, sorry to miss you. My political scienceclass ran longer than usual.
M:That’s been happening quite a lot lately, hasn’t it?
W:I guess so. Actually, what happens is that a group of us hang arounda while after class to talk with our professor.
M:Who is the twentieth century’s Socrates?
W:Professor Smith. Have you heard of him?
M:Mm, he is quite famous in the political science department.
W:And well-deserved. The same students who fall asleep in groupdiscussions fight for front row seats in his lecture.
M:Oh no, I hope this isn’t catching.
W:You can joke. But it’s great to have a professor who’s not onlyinteresting but prepared to give up time to students.
M:I know. Maybe I should sit in his class some time. Do you think he’dcare?
W:Not at all. Lots of students bring their friends. He says he neverfeels too glaD.
M:Well, just to be safe, I think I’ll bring my lunch along as well.

W:Hello, everyone. Today I’d like to talk about advertising on theWeB.Youhave to be careful not to be fooled or tricked by the
advertisementson the Internet, just because something is said to be a bargaindoesn’talways mean it’scheap. Maybe it’sactually cheaper in a regular shop. And often something that issupposed to be new and improved has only changed the package design! Now the best part is, of course, the shopping. I love to buy articlesof everyday use, so I can get lots of information about them on thewebsite on line. For example, if I want a camera, I can check itsquality on a camera website on the net. I can even download picturestaken by the camera to test its quality! And shopping online can savetime. You don’t have to go to a shop or walk around a crowdedshopping area, so you needn’t waste too much time. The Internet isreally useful for shopping, but be careful not to spend too much.Happy shopping!
